Cravanzana is a small town in the province of Cuneo located on the hills above the Belbo Valley in the Alta Langa region of southern Piedmont near the border with Liguria. It’s here that you’ll find the optimal climatic conditions for growing the “Tonda Gentile delle Langhe” hazelnut cultivar.

The origins of hazelnuts in Alta Langa date back to the late 1800s. At that time the landscape was covered in vineyards, but with the arrival of phylloxera and peronospora local farmers, like farmers across Italy, were forced to find a new crop.

The intuition of agronomists, in particular Emanuele Ferraris, gave new hope to the local farmers. Ferraris demonstrated that hazelnut trees were more productive than grape vines and had a greater resistance to pests. Thus hazelnut cultivation began in Piedmont. Tradition says that the first hazelnut plants were planted in the area between the towns of Cravanzana and Feisoglio and spread to the surrounding areas.

Today hazelnuts are cultivated throughout Piedmont, from the hills to the plains, and are known for being “the best in the world”. However, the hazelnuts of Alta Langa have a quality and scent unequaled elsewhere.
